Liquid-like grain boundary complexion and sub-eutectic activated sintering in CuO-doped TiO2

چکیده
The eutectic temperature and composition of the TiO2-CuO system were carefully measured to be 1010 ± 10 C and 83CuO:17TiO2, respectively. Subsequently, a TiO2-CuO phase diagram was computed, representing a correction and major improvement from the phase diagram available in literature. Dilatometry measurements and isothermal sintering experiments unequivocally demonstrated the activated (enhanced) sintering of TiO2 with the addition of CuO, occurring at as low as >300 C below the eutectic temperature. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) characterization of waterquenched specimens revealed the formation of nanometer-thick, liquid-like, intergranular films (IGFs), a type of grain boundary (GB) complexion (a.k.a. 2-D interfacial phase), concurrently with accelerated densification and well below the bulk eutectic temperature. Consequently, activated sintering is explained from the enhanced mass transport in this premelting-like complexion. An interfacial thermodynamic model was used to quantitatively explain and justify the stabilization of liquid-like IGFs below the eutectic temperature and the temperature-dependent IGF thicknesses measured by HRTEM. A GB l diagram was computed, for the first time for a ceramic system, to represent the thermodynamic tendency for general GBs in CuO-doped TiO2 to disorder. © 2017 Acta Materialia Inc. متن کاملThin intergranular films and solid-state activated sintering in nickel-doped tungsten
Nickel-doped tungsten specimens were prepared with high purity chemicals and sintered. Although activated sintering starts more than 400 C below the bulk eutectic temperature, the nickel-rich crystalline secondary phase does not wet the tungsten grain boundaries in the solid state. These results contrast with the classical activated sintering model whereby the secondary crystalline phase was pr...
متن کاملImprovement of ionic conductivity of gadolinium doped ceria electrolyte with nano CuO sintering aid
Gadanium doped cerium oxide ceramic (GDC) is widely used as solid electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells because of its high oxygen ion conductivity. In this study, the effect of addition of nano CuO as a sintering aid on the properties of GDC electrolyte were investigated. For this purpose, 0.2, 0.5, and 1% mole of nano Cuo was added to GDC ceramics, which was synthesized by the solid-state me...
متن کاملGrain boundary complexions
Grain boundaries exhibit phase-like behavior in which their structure, chemistry and properties may change discontinuously at critical values of thermodynamic parameters such as temperature, pressure and chemical potential. Therefore, grain boundaries (and other interfaces such as surfaces and heterophase boundaries) can be treated as thermodynamically stable interfacial states. To differentiat...
متن کاملSintering and yttrium grain boundary segregation in sub-micron grain size alumina
Sintering behavior with and without external stress was investigated using undoped and doped (1500 ppm yttria) sub-micron a-alumina powders. The yttria doped alumina showed anomalous behavior with grain size around 0.9 pm, a second peak in densification rate during free sintering and a stagnation followed by a steep increase in flow stress during sinter forging. These were thought to correspond...
